Suez Canal
The Suez Canal is one of the busiest transportation routes in the world. Approximately 12% of global trade goods pass through this artificial canal, connecting Europe and Asia.
The Suez Canal, approximately 193km long, separates the African continent from Asia. The canal also serves as the shortest maritime link between Asia and Europe and the surrounding lands of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.
The waterway was first dug over 3,500 years ago but underwent major renovations in the 19th century to connect the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea via the Nile River.
Every year it offers a vital alternative to longer routes, such as around the Cape of Good Hope, providing nations with a crucial geopolitical advantage and ensuring energy security through the transit of oil and gas shipments.
