Alumina

Alumina (Al₂O₃), also known as aluminum oxide, is a ceramic compound with high hardness, excellent heat resistance, and outstanding corrosion resistance. It is widely used in various industrial applications, including metallurgy, electronics, and aerospace, due to its exceptional durability and chemical stability.

Corrosion Properties of Alumina

Strong Chemical Corrosion Resistance:

  • Unaffected by strong acids (except hydrofluoric acid - HF).
  • Resistant to corrosion from alkalis, organic solvents, and strong oxidation.

Thermal Stability and Oxidation Resistance:

  • Does not decompose at high temperatures (withstands over 2,000°C).
  • Does not oxidize or react with air like metals.

Excellent Wear Resistance:

  • High hardness (second only to diamond and silicon carbide).
  • Does not wear down quickly in harsh environments such as molten metal flow or corrosive chemicals.
